●What are Reservations in context to quota?
Based on provisions in the Indian Constitution, Reservations allows the Union Government and the States and Territories of India to set reserved quotas or seats, which lower the qualifications needed in exams, job openings, university admissions, scholarships, loan approval, promotions etc.
●Types of Reservations-

☆Type 1 – Based on Communities, Caste and Religion.
For Example – OBC, SC, ST etc.
☆Type 2 – Based on Gender.
For Example – females, non binary.
☆Type 3 – Based on Profession
For Example – Farmers and their families.
Today we will discuss about the 1st Type of Reservations which are based on Communities
●Advantages of Reservations –

☆Reservations, quotas help the SC, ST, OBC to get good education, jobs, other benefits.
☆They help these backward communities to end their poverty cycle.
☆The communities can get an equal chance to improve their life.
☆They will get financial help.
☆No one can refuse/avoid giving opportunities to these communities.
●Disadvantages of Reservations –

☆The People from General category don’t get the benefits.
☆The deserving candidate may not get the opportunity due to reservations.
☆Rich/well to do people of backward communities also get the benefits of Reservations.
☆Corruption and dirty politics takes place for this agenda.
☆Nowadays there is decline in discrimination based on caste.
☆Only backward castes get the benefit, whether they are well to do or not, whereas poor people of General category don’t get any such benefits.
☆Since they get reservations they may not put much efforts to get what they need/ want.
Personal Opinion –

●That is –

Reservations Based on Economic Status instead of Reservations Based on Caste
If Reservations are done on the basis of Economic Status then whether backward class or not the needy family will get the benefits of Reservations. Yes, certain amount of Reservations should be given to backward classes, the rest should be given to the poor families of general categories. Scholarships should be provided to students of middle class families on Basis of merit if they cannot afford high level education for their children.
Reservations are good till certain limit, but they do have disadvantages, we need to tackle them by introducing new solutions. A solution with balanced benefits for all communities and categories is necessary.
